Regional Detail
Northeast: NY, MA, CT, NJ, PA, ME, NH, VT, RI
The Northeast runs the highest locksmith prices in the country, driven by elevated labor costs, high commercial real estate for businesses with storefronts, insurance requirements, and dense urban markets where travel times are unpredictable.
New York City
Residential lockout: $120–$200. Rekey: $120–$175/lock. Highest prices in the US driven by labor costs and overhead.
Boston
Residential lockout: $100–$160. Rekey: $110–$150/lock. Consistent with Northeast averages.
Philadelphia
Residential lockout: $90–$155. Rekey: $100–$140/lock. Slightly below NYC/Boston.
Northeast Pricing Notes
- Most states (NY, MA, CT, NJ) require BSIS-equivalent licensing, which raises professional quality floors
- Urban density means shorter travel times but higher overhead costs passed to customers
- After-hours surcharges are higher in NYC (often +40%) vs. other Northeast markets (+20–30%)
- Commercial locksmith rates in Manhattan can run 2x national averages
Southeast: FL, GA, SC, NC, TN, AL, MS, VA
The Southeast runs near or slightly below national averages. Lower cost of living and stronger automotive locksmith competition from larger service fleets (especially in Florida) keep prices moderate.
Miami / Orlando
Residential lockout: $85–$145. Rekey: $90–$135/lock. High competition keeps prices moderate despite FL cost levels.
Atlanta
Residential lockout: $75–$130. Rekey: $80–$125/lock. Generally near national average.
Charlotte / Raleigh
Residential lockout: $75–$130. Rekey: $80–$125/lock. Growing markets with strong competition.
Midwest: IL, OH, MI, MN, WI, IN, MO, IA
The Midwest consistently runs 10–20% below national averages for residential services. Lower labor costs and shorter travel distances in suburban and rural areas drive below-average pricing.
Chicago
Residential lockout: $85–$140. Rekey: $90–$130/lock. Urban premiums partially offset Midwest labor savings.
Columbus / Cleveland
Residential lockout: $70–$120. Rekey: $75–$115/lock. Among the lowest pricing for major metros nationally.
Minneapolis
Residential lockout: $75–$130. Rekey: $80–$120/lock. Near national average despite Midwest location.
West Coast: CA, WA, OR, NV, HI, AK
The West Coast, particularly California, runs the second-highest prices nationally after the Northeast. High minimum wages, expensive commercial real estate for storefront operations, and California's BSIS licensing requirements all contribute to elevated costs.
Los Angeles / San Francisco
Residential lockout: $120–$200. Rekey: $120–$175/lock. Among the highest in the country.
Seattle
Residential lockout: $100–$165. Rekey: $100–$150/lock. High but slightly below Southern California.
Portland / Sacramento
Residential lockout: $90–$155. Rekey: $95–$145/lock. Below LA/SF but above national average.
California BSIS Licensing Note
California requires locksmiths to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) license, one of the strictest in the US. This raises the quality floor for California locksmith services but also contributes to higher pricing. Always verify a California locksmith's BSIS license at the BSIS public license lookup.
Southwest: TX, AZ, NM, CO, UT, OK
The Southwest runs near national averages with significant variation between major metros (Dallas, Phoenix, Denver) and smaller cities. Texas has no statewide locksmith licensing requirement, which creates more variability in service quality and pricing.
Dallas / Houston
Residential lockout: $80–$145. Rekey: $85–$135/lock. Large metro markets with strong competition.
Phoenix
Residential lockout: $75–$135. Rekey: $80–$125/lock. Near or slightly below national average.
Denver / Colorado Springs
Residential lockout: $80–$140. Rekey: $85–$130/lock. Growing market with moderate pricing.
How to Use This Data
Using Regional Price Data to Evaluate a Quote
Find your region
Identify which region applies. For large states (TX, CA), urban markets within a state may be at the high end of the regional range while rural areas are at the low end.
Identify your service type
Use the service type tables on the Services page to find the specific service range, then cross-reference with your region for a calibrated estimate.
Evaluate the quote
A quote within the regional range is reasonable. More than 25% above the high end of the range warrants requesting an itemized breakdown before authorizing. Below the low end of the range warrants extra scrutiny on arrival.
